1920 American LaFrance four-wheel tillered piece, front wheel drive. This is simply a motorized version of a horse drawn ladder truck. The ladder was spring raised. I saw this in 1937 when my Dad took me to see the new fire house at 14th and Rhode Island Avenue N E in D C. The newly organized Truck Company 15 went in service with this as its original piece. It had served 17 years as Truck 5 in Georgetown before it became Truck 15. This is the piece that got me interested in making fire engine models. It is my second attempt at this particular one. This first one, and all of my early efforts as a kid were destroyed in 2007. I last saw the original about 1945 in a junkyard on Brentwood Road N E when it was being cut up as scrap iron.
